Loft Style Condos in an Old Mill in Boston on the Milton Line

History of Baker Chocolate

The Baker Mill Complex was once a thriving chocolate production facility located in the heart of Lower Mills.

Baker’s Chocolate began in 1780, when Dr. John Baker started producing chocolate in Massachusetts.
His first product was a cake of chocolate for making a sweetened chocolate drink. Distribution was mainly in the Northeastern United States
until 1804 when Dr. Baker’s son, Edmund Baker, inherited the family business and increased production with a state-of-the-art mill.

Production steadily increased through the century. The trademark logo of La Belle Chocolatiere was adopted in 1883 by the fourth-generation familial owner, William Henry Pierce, step-nephew of Walter Baker. Pierce began advertising Baker’s Chocolate heavily in newspapers to increase profits. Promotional offers of tableware and logo pins helped attract customers. At his death in 1896, the Forbes Syndicate bought the company. They eventually sold the company to the Postum Cereal Company, now known as General Foods. The company was passed onto Kraft Foods in 1989 when they acquired General Foods.

Turned to Condos in The Early 90’s

In 1990, a couple of the buildings were renovated and converted into a condo complex. The complex is located
along the banks of the Neponset River.

The units have extremely high ceilings and exposed brick and beams. There is a good mix of 1 and 2 bedrooms. The buildings are serviced by elevators.
The complex is pet friendly. One of the big draws is that it is located on the Redline for easy access from Milton/Lower Mills into the city near the Financial District and South Station.

All units have washer and dryer hookups. Each unit usually has a very good sized private storage compartment.

There are modern amenities located within the complex. On the short list are:

  • Lap Pool
  • Whirlpool
  • Club Room
  • Small Gym
